stairs & crane operators

walking down the stairs in your building instead of, say, taking the elevator because it's DOA, one really gets a sense of how big the building really is. turns out that taking the stairs when the elevators are broken is also a nice way to meet your neighbors. though it also turns out that descending twenty three flights of stairs (in my case) is not such a chatty environment, particularly for those already in the stairwell (ie coming from above). in fact, i seemed to be the only one enjoying the little early morning adventure. reminded me of fire drills back in elementary school. always a good time for a little spontaneous chitty-chat.
another fun, in a mundane kind of way, measure of living in a denny triangle high rise is the relationship you build with adjacent crane operators. apparently they have lavatory facilities in those things. imagine working in one all day without relief!
i haven't been so successful in striking a conversation with them either.
c'est la [urban] vie.

UPDATE: apparently a contractor accidentally turned off the "elevator switch" and the outage only lasted ten minutes.
